10 Simple Actions
Reduce
Avoid making new trash. Prefer food storage containers over disposable ones. Carry reusable water bottles and coffee cups in place of paper or styrofoam cups.

Recycle
Take advantage of curbside recycling--especially of paper, plastic, glass and aluminum. If recycling isn't offered in your area, encourage local officials to make it happen.

Bring a Bag
Shop with reusable shopping bags (sold in most stores). Store them in your car so they're always handy.

Thermostat Setting
Set your thermostat 1 degree warmer in summer or 1 degree cooler in winter. Choose more moderate temperatures when you're away from your home for longer periods.

Shop Caringly.
Choose non-toxic chemical products, especially for cleaning. Pick refillable containers. Select seafood and other products from sustainable sources.

Reuse
Find a new purpose for containers rather than tossing them: nails and screws in jelly jars, game pieces in laundry detergent bins. Donate old clothes to charity. Reuse old linens and towels as cleaning rags.

Conserve Water
Turn off the water when brushing teeth, washing dishes, shaving. Opt for shorter showers instead of long baths. Collect rainwater to water plants in your garden.

Light Efficiently
Energy-efficient light bulbs last longer, conserve energy, and save money.

Drive Less
Consolidate trips. Carpool. Use public transportation where it's available.

Eat More Vegetables.
Plant-based foods generally require less land, water, energy and chemicals than meats and highly-processed foods.
